Section: Toronto-Bennett Heritage Side Trail to Tenth Line. Distance 17.3 km
Hike Leader: John Giesbrecht
Hikers: John G, Agnes, Ella, Rudi
Description- The hike began at Scotsdale Farm, 8:55 AM on a crisp, sunny 8’ C day.
We passed the beautiful old barn on the Bennett Side Trail as the trail continued past a pond,
over Snow’s Creek and eventually crossing Owl Creek and re-entering the forest.
Apparently this was the site of a native village some 500 years, which was easy to understand given the beautiful surroundings. We met the main trail at km 34.8 and turned right. Skirting the steep valley wall of Snow’s Creek we hiked South crossing 8th Line and entered the Great Esker Side Trail at its Northern junction.
This S.T. follows a winding Esker created by glacial action eons ago. Bright Fall colours interspersed with conifers and giant cedars, dappled sunlight and bright red and yellow leaves under foot made for a wonderful day.
We rejoined the main trail at km 32.8. As we hiked back towards Scotsdale Farm we passed many large moss covered rocks. At km 30.9 we entered the Maureen Smith S.T. that lead us back to the Bennett Heritage S.T. Retracing our steps to the main trail at km 34.8 we now turned left and followed white blazes North. Crossing Owl Creek once again we climbed the escarpment, crossed Eighth Line and entered the Irwin Quarry Side Trail.
Leaving the Irvin Quarry S.T. we returned to the Main Trail and headed South to the Roberts Side Trail. This Side Trail proved to be a beautiful hike through mature woods back to the Main Trail at km 37.0. Walking along the top of a ridge we eventually descended to Tenth line where the car awaited. It was 1:50 Pm when we finished the hike and all agreed that it was a wonderful hike with beautiful views and perfect weather. Rudi’s GPS indicated we had walked almost 20 km rather then 17.3 and our feet certainly agreed with the longer distance.
This site contains the details of the the Blue & White Explorers which was a regular program of the Pathfinders Hiking Group of Oakville .
