Hike Report - Niagara 4 including 7 km of Bert Lowe Side Trail

 16.2 to 20.2 km
Leader: John N
Hikers: Peter, John G. Manu, John N. Bev, Shirley, Ann, Anita, Jennifer, Joanne

We found the Parking at Holland Road easily and proceeded to Woodend Conservation area to start our hike. It was a crisp morning with sun shining. We started by crossing Taylor road and into the bush. There was some ice on the trail initially we went along the edge of a golf course where the path is always muddy. Then we hiked along the abandoned roadbed to the Third Welland Canal (1887 to 1931).

Next we went along Glendale Ave past the GM plant and over the current (fourth) Welland Canal .

The trail continued beside the Canal and met the Bert Lowe side trail. We took the side trail up the west bank past the Twin Flight Locks.

When we passed the murals painted on the rear walls of the industrial buildings in Thorold we were all impressed by the beautiful work and the historical information about the canal system.

The trail was along the paved path by the Canal. We observed several ships including the Canada Steam Ship Lines Taddousac

We met a couple of gentlemen walking their dog who explained the large factories across the canal were paper mills.
The hike ended after passing over a steel bridge passing a ball park, back to the cars. Because we were so fast today we finished the hike at noon and decided to go to the Tim Hortons near by to have lunch and settle accounts. It was a fine day and the Canal walk was remarked to be an interesting change.
